Best Bearded Dragon Enclosures in 2026: 4 Picks Compared, 4 x 2 x 2 to 6 x 2 x 2 ft

The best bearded dragon enclosures compared: 4 x 2 x 2, 5 x 2 x 2 and 6 x 2 x 2 ft picks in PVC, glass and wood, with UVB mounting and sizing from care sources.

8 min read 6 sources

An adult bearded dragon needs an enclosure at least 4 feet long, 2 feet deep and 2 feet tall (120 x 60 x 60 cm), and ReptiFiles prefers 6 feet. That rules out the 20 to 40 gallon “starter kits” sold in most pet stores. This guide compares the enclosures that meet the adult size, in PVC, glass and wood, and explains how each one takes a UVB tube and a basking lamp, because that is where most setups go wrong.

How we chose

We did not test these enclosures. We compared the makers’ specs against what vets and care sources ask for, and kept only enclosures at the adult size or larger.

  • Length first. The RSPCA’s minimum for one adult is 120 x 60 x 60 cm (4 x 2 x 2 ft). ReptiFiles asks for 6 x 2 x 2 ft and accepts 4 x 2 x 2 for small adults under about 18 inches. VCA’s rule of thumb is a length at least three times the dragon’s total length. Length is what lets you build a hot basking end and a cool end far enough apart for the dragon to choose.
  • Front-opening doors. Reaching down from above looks like a predator to a lizard, and front doors make cleaning far easier. ReptiFiles’ enclosure comparison makes the same point.
  • A way to mount UVB properly. ReptiFiles suggests a T5 HO tube about half the enclosure length, on the same side as the heat: about 22 inches for a 4 ft enclosure, 34 inches for 6 ft. The enclosure has to let you hang it at the right distance, over mesh or inside.
  • Heat holding and security. The RVC says wooden or fiberglass vivaria are ideal because they give visual security and allow ventilation at lizard level. PVC does the same. Glass works but loses more heat and gives less cover.

PVC vs glass vs wood: the quick version

MaterialStrengthsWatch out for
PVCHolds heat well, light, solid sides, front doorsBigger outlay; check how lamps mount
Glass (aluminum frame)Cheaper, easy to see in and cleanLoses heat through the sides; less visual security
Wood (melamine vivarium)Holds heat, solid sides, the UK normNeeds sealing against moisture; lamps inside need guards

Reptile Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure V3

Best overall

Reptile Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure V3 (120 gallon)

A 48 x 24 x 24 inch (about 120 x 60 x 60 cm) enclosure with PVC side and back panels, front glass doors, an aluminum frame and a heavy-duty screen top. That footprint matches the RSPCA minimum for one adult dragon, and the opaque PVC walls hold basking heat better than an all-glass tank.

Best for

US keepers who want one enclosure from baby to adult, without buying a starter tank first.

Worth knowing

Lamps sit on the screen top, and mesh cuts UVB, so set the UVB tube distance for a mesh top (see the lighting guide). Every heat lamp still needs a thermostat.

Who it suits: US keepers who want one enclosure from baby to adult.

What stands out: it hits the 4 x 2 x 2 ft adult footprint with PVC side and back panels, so it holds basking heat better than glass and gives the dragon solid walls. Glass front doors give easy access, and the heavy-duty screen top takes a basking dome and a 22 inch UVB fixture side by side.

What to watch for (UVB): with lamps on top, the UVB passes through mesh, which blocks part of it. ReptiFiles’ starting point for an Arcadia T5 HO 12% over mesh is about 11 inches from tube to the dragon’s back, against 16 to 17 inches with no mesh. Set your basking platform height to match, and check it with a UV index meter if you can. Every heat lamp needs a thermostat.

REPTI ZOO 120 Gallon Aluminum Terrarium (US) / Repti-Life 4ft Vivarium (UK)

Best budget

4 x 2 x 2 ft budget enclosure (REPTI ZOO aluminum in the US, Repti-Life vivarium in the UK)

The cheapest way we found to get the full 4 x 2 x 2 ft adult size. In the US it is a REPTI ZOO 120 gallon terrarium with an aluminum frame and a tempered glass door; in the UK it is the Repti-Life 4ft flatpacked wooden vivarium. Both meet the RSPCA minimum for one adult.

Size
48 x 24 x 24 in (about 120 x 60 x 60 cm)

REPTI ZOO 120 gallon, aluminum frame, tempered glass door
UK version
Repti-Life 4ft vivarium, 15 mm MFC, toughened glass front

Best for

Keepers on a tight budget who still want to buy the adult size once.

Worth knowing

The US listing comes in colored frames, so check the color before you order. Glass sides lose more heat than PVC or wood, so expect to tune basking wattage, and every heat lamp still needs a thermostat.

Who it suits: keepers on a tight budget who still want to buy the adult size once.

What stands out: in the US this is a 4 x 2 x 2 ft terrarium with an aluminum frame and a tempered glass door, usually the lowest-cost route to the full adult footprint. In the UK the same slot is the Repti-Life 4ft flatpacked wooden vivarium.

What to watch for: the glass sides lose more heat than PVC or wood, so you may need more basking wattage, on a dimming thermostat. Clear sides give less of the visual security the RVC describes, so add a background to the back and sides. The US listing comes in colored frames; check the color before ordering.

UK alternative: 4ft wooden vivarium

Repti-Life 48 x 24 x 24 inch Vivarium (4ft, flatpacked)

A UK-made wooden vivarium in the 4 x 2 x 2 ft size, built from 15 mm melamine-faced board with a toughened glass front. Wooden vivaria hold heat well and give a dragon solid walls for security.

Size
48 x 24 x 24 in (about 122 x 61 x 61 cm)
Material
15 mm MFC (melamine-faced chipboard)
Front
4 mm toughened safety glass
Ventilation
Four large vents
Other
Stackable, solid back, made in the UK

Best for

UK keepers who want a full adult-size vivarium at the RSPCA minimum footprint.

Worth knowing

It arrives flatpacked, so plan an hour or two to build it. Lamps mount inside a wooden viv, so every heat bulb needs a guard and a thermostat.

UVB in a wooden vivarium: the top is solid, so the tube and the basking lamp mount inside. That removes the mesh, so the lamp sits further from the dragon (ReptiFiles’ 16 to 17 inches for a 12% tube), and every heat bulb needs a guard so the dragon cannot touch it. Seal the inside corners if you mist.

Reptile Habitats 5x2x2 PVC Enclosure V3

Best step up (5 ft)

Reptile Habitats 5x2x2 PVC Enclosure V3 (150 gallon)

The 5 ft version of the Reptile Habitats V3: PVC panels, glass doors, an aluminum frame and a heavy-duty screen top, at 60 x 24 x 24 inches. The extra foot over a 4 x 2 x 2 gives a longer gap between the hot end and the cool end.

Best for

A large adult that has outgrown 4 ft, or a room that cannot fit a 6 ft enclosure.

Worth knowing

Measure your floor and stand first. Lamps sit on the screen top, so set UVB distance for mesh. For a ball python, cover part of the screen if humidity drops.

Who it suits: owners of a large adult, or anyone who cannot fit 6 ft but wants more than 4.

What stands out: VCA’s length rule is a good test here. The RSPCA puts an adult at about 18 inches long, and three times that is 54 inches, already longer than a 4 ft enclosure. At 60 inches this one clears it, with the same PVC panels, glass doors and screen top as the 4 ft version.

What to watch for: a 5 ft enclosure still takes a UVB tube of about half its length, so plan the fixture before you order, and measure your stand and doorways. Lamps sit on mesh, so use the over-mesh distances.

Reptile Habitats 6x2x2 PVC Enclosure V3 (US) / 6ft Vivarium (UK)

Best premium (6 ft)

6 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure (Reptile Habitats 180 gallon PVC in the US, a 6ft vivarium in the UK)

The size ReptiFiles prefers for an adult: 6 x 2 x 2 ft (about 180 x 60 x 60 cm). The extra length gives a gentler temperature gradient and more room to move. In the US the pick is the 180 gallon version of the Reptile Habitats PVC enclosure; in the UK, a 6ft wooden vivarium.

US version

Wooden vivarium, size from the search

Best for

Keepers with the floor space who want the roomiest common size from day one.

Worth knowing

A longer enclosure needs a longer UVB tube (ReptiFiles suggests about 34 inches for 6 ft) and room for a stand. Measure your space and doorways before ordering.

Who it suits: keepers with the floor space who want the size ReptiFiles prefers, from day one.

What stands out: 72 x 24 x 24 inches (about 180 x 60 x 60 cm) gives the gentlest temperature gradient and the most room to move of any common size. In the US it is the 180 gallon version of the same Reptile Habitats PVC enclosure; in the UK the link searches for a 6ft wooden vivarium.

What to watch for: it needs a 34 inch UVB tube (ReptiFiles) and a long stand. ReptiFiles also suggests about 3 ft of usable height where possible, since dragons climb, so add branches and a sturdy basking platform to make use of the 2 ft you have. For the UK search, check all three measurements in the listing.

What to avoid

  • Starter kits under 4 ft. A standard 40 gallon breeder tank is about 36 x 18 x 16 inches. VCA gives 20 gallons as a juvenile minimum, but every adult figure above is larger, so a kit is a few months of use before a second purchase.
  • Top-opening tanks. Reaching in from above stresses a dragon and makes cleaning harder.
  • Coil UVB bulbs and UVB through glass or plastic. Use a linear T5 HO tube of 10 to 14%. VCA and ReptiFiles both say glass and plastic block UVB, so never put a sheet of either between the lamp and the dragon. See the UVB guide.
  • Unregulated heat and heat rocks. Every basking lamp goes on a thermostat, and heat rocks have no place in a dragon setup.
  • Colored night bulbs. If the room gets too cold at night, use a heater that gives no light, on a thermostat.
  • Two dragons in one enclosure. The RSPCA and ReptiFiles advise housing every dragon alone, because they are territorial and fights injure toes and tails.
  • Calcium sand, wood chips and walnut shell. VCA lists them among causes of impaction.

By species

Buy 4 x 2 x 2 ft as the floor, not the goal, and go longer if your room allows. Choose the material for your home, plan the UVB tube before you order, and put the dragon in it alone.
