Crested geckos live in the branches, so the most important number on any terrarium is its height. A tall enclosure gives a gecko room to climb and jump, and a natural gap between a warmer top and a cooler floor, which matters for a species that is stressed by sustained temperatures above 85°F (29°C). This guide compares tall, front-opening terrariums from the 18 x 18 x 36 inch (45 x 45 x 90 cm) size care sources recommend up to 4 ft tall, and looks at the two details that decide how easy one is to run: ventilation and the base.

How we chose
We did not test these terrariums. We compared makers’ specs against vet and care guidance and kept only those that meet the adult size.
- Height first. ReptiFiles gives 18 x 18 x 36 inches as the minimum for any gecko over 12 g and says “larger is always better.” The RSPCA and the Royal Veterinary College set a lower bar of about 45 x 45 x 60 cm (24 inches tall), and PetMD says height matters more than floor. Every pick here is at least 36 inches tall, so it meets all of them.
- Front-opening doors that close securely. Crested geckos are good at slipping through gaps, and front doors let you mist, feed and spot clean without reaching down from above.
- A mesh top. A low-output UVB lamp and, if needed, a small heat bulb can sit on it. The RVC notes glass vivariums with mesh tops are the usual setup.
- Ventilation that lets it dry out. ReptiFiles wants humidity of 60 to 80% after misting, falling to about 50% before the next mist, and warns that constant moisture encourages mold. The RVC says good ventilation is needed.
- Material. The RSPCA prefers glass to wood because of the humidity. PVC also handles humidity and holds warmth, which can be a drawback in a hot room.
REPTI ZOO 24 x 18 x 36 Tall Glass Terrarium

Best overall
REPTI ZOO Tall Glass Terrarium, 24 x 18 x 36 in
A tall glass terrarium with double hinged front doors and a screen top. At 36 in (about 90 cm) high it meets the ReptiFiles adult minimum, and it is 6 in wider than that minimum, which leaves more room for branches and plants.
- Size
- 24 x 18 x 36 in (about 60 x 45 x 90 cm)
- Volume
- 67 gallons
- Material
- Glass
- Access
- Double hinged front doors
- Top
- Screen ventilation
Best for
One adult crested gecko on a budget, with room for a full floor-to-ceiling climbing layout.
Worth knowing
It ships flat and you assemble it. Glass holds humidity well, so let the terrarium dry out between mistings, as the guides advise. One gecko per terrarium.
Who it suits: most keepers setting up one adult gecko.
What stands out: it meets the ReptiFiles height of 36 inches and is 6 inches wider than the minimum, which leaves more room for branches and plants across the width. Double hinged front doors and a screen top cover the access and ventilation basics, and it ships flat.
What to watch for: glass holds humidity well, so let the terrarium dry out between mistings. In a warm room or direct sun, glass heats fast; place it in the coolest stable room and check the top with a probe thermometer. You assemble it yourself.
UK and size-search alternative
Tall front-opening glass terrarium, 18 x 18 x 36 in (45 x 45 x 90 cm)
Crested geckos live up in the branches, so height matters more than floor space. This link searches for the 18 x 18 x 36 inch (about 45 x 45 x 90 cm) size that ReptiFiles gives as the minimum for juveniles and adults, which is taller than the 45 x 45 x 60 cm minimum set by the RSPCA and the Royal Veterinary College.
- Target size
- 18 x 18 x 36 in (about 45 x 45 x 90 cm)
- Material
- Glass, as the RSPCA and RVC prefer
- Access
- Front-opening doors with a lock
- Top
- Mesh, so a UVB lamp can sit on it
Best for
One adult crested gecko, with room for branches, plants and a vertical temperature gradient.
Worth knowing
Check all three measurements: many "tall" tanks are only 24 in (60 cm) high. Look for front-opening doors that lock and a mesh top for the UVB lamp. Glass holds humidity well, so make sure there is some ventilation.
If you are in the UK, or prefer another brand such as Exo Terra, this link searches for the 45 x 45 x 90 cm size. Many “tall” tanks are only 60 cm high, so check all three measurements.
WACOOL 18 x 18 x 36 Front-Opening Terrarium
Best for bioactive
WACOOL 50 Gallon Front-Opening Terrarium, 18 x 18 x 36 in
A tall front-opening terrarium at exactly the ReptiFiles adult minimum of 18 x 18 x 36 inches. The sides can be set up as glass or as mesh plus glass, and the 10 inch deep base holds a drainage layer and soil for a bioactive setup.
- Size
- 18 x 18 x 36 in (about 45 x 45 x 90 cm)
- Volume
- Sold as 50 gallons
- Sides
- Glass, or mesh plus glass
- Base
- 10 in deep, for a bioactive layer
- Access
- Front opening
Best for
A planted, bioactive crested gecko setup, with the option of more side ventilation in a humid home.
Worth knowing
A smaller brand than Exo Terra or REPTI ZOO. The deep base takes up some of the 36 inches, so the climbing height above the soil is lower. Mesh sides let humidity out faster in a dry home.
Who it suits: keepers planning a planted, bioactive setup.
What stands out: the 10 inch deep base has room for a drainage layer, a soil mix and leaf litter without the substrate spilling out when the doors open. The sides can be glass or mesh plus glass, so in a humid home you can add ventilation, and in a dry home you can keep it closed. It is the exact ReptiFiles minimum footprint.
What to watch for: the deep base takes some of the 36 inches, so the climbing height above the soil is less than in a tank with a shallow base. Mesh sides let humidity fall quickly in a dry home. WACOOL is a smaller brand than REPTI ZOO or Exo Terra.
Bioactive basics: ReptiFiles describes springtails and isopods breaking down waste and mold and returning nutrients to the soil, and notes springtails can build a stable population within a few weeks. The RSPCA suggests considering bioactive for permanent housing. It still needs spot cleaning, and the cleanup crew needs feeding if there is not enough waste.
REPTI ZOO 24 x 24 x 36 Tall Glass Terrarium
Best roomy glass
REPTI ZOO 90 Gallon Tall Glass Terrarium, 24 x 24 x 36 in
A tall glass terrarium with a front-opening door and screen top ventilation, 6 inches wider and deeper than the ReptiFiles adult minimum. The extra floor gives more room for plants and branches at the same 36 inch height.
- Size
- 24 x 24 x 36 in (about 60 x 60 x 90 cm)
- Volume
- Sold as 90 gallons
- Material
- Glass
- Access
- Front-opening door
- Top
- Screen ventilation
Best for
Keepers who want more than the minimum in glass, with plenty of room for a planted layout.
Worth knowing
Bigger glass means a heavier terrarium, so check the stand. It is the same height as cheaper 36 inch options; height matters more than floor for this species.
Who it suits: keepers who want more than the minimum in glass, with space for a large planted layout.
What stands out: 6 inches wider and deeper than the ReptiFiles minimum at the same 36 inch height, with a front-opening door and screen top ventilation. The extra floor gives room for more plants, more branches running corner to corner, and a feeding ledge away from the basking perch.
What to watch for: this is a heavy glass terrarium, so check your stand. It is no taller than cheaper 36 inch options, and for this species height matters more than floor, so if you have the budget for a bigger enclosure, consider going taller instead (see the next pick).
Zen Habitat 3.0, 2’ x 2’ x 4’
Best premium (4 ft tall)
Zen Habitats 3.0 Reptile Enclosure, 2 x 2 x 4 ft
A 2 x 2 x 4 ft (24 x 24 x 48 in) enclosure, the same size the ReptiFiles author uses for their own crested gecko. ReptiFiles says larger is always better, and the extra height gives a clearer gap between the warm top and the cool floor.
- Size
- 2 x 2 x 4 ft (24 x 24 x 48 in)
- Model
- Zen Habitat 3.0
Best for
Keepers who want more than the minimum, or plan a planted bioactive setup.
Worth knowing
Check the listing shows the tall layout (4 ft high), and check the panel material: the enclosure size guide notes that PVC holds warmth, which matters in a hot room. It needs a lot of branches and plants to fill.
Who it suits: keepers who want well beyond the minimum, or a large bioactive build.
What stands out: at 24 x 24 x 48 inches, it is the same size the ReptiFiles author uses for their own crested gecko. The extra foot of height gives a clearer gap between the warm top and the cool floor, which is the main defense against overheating. Zen Habitats’ 3.0 line uses PVC panels the maker rates for 0 to 100% humidity, with sliding acrylic doors and a steel screen top.
What to watch for: PVC holds warmth, which helps in a cool home but can push the top too warm in a hot room, so check it with a probe on the hottest day. A 4 ft tall enclosure needs many branches and plants to fill.

What to avoid
- Long, low tanks. A 36 x 18 x 18 inch tank suits a leopard gecko, not a climber. Crested geckos need height; the RSPCA links floppy tail syndrome to inadequate climbing space.
- Tanks under 36 inches tall for an adult. An 18 x 18 x 24 inch terrarium meets the RSPCA and RVC minimum, but not ReptiFiles’. It is fine as a step for a juvenile, not as a long-term home.
- All-screen cages in a dry home. They let humidity escape fast, which makes the misting cycle hard to manage.
- Unregulated heat and heat rocks. Many homes need no heat lamp at all. If yours does, use a low-wattage bulb on a dimming thermostat, with the probe at the top branch. The RVC asks for heat sources to be guarded.
- Colored night bulbs. For night heat in a cold room, use a heater that gives no light, on a thermostat.
- Two geckos in one terrarium. The RSPCA says crested geckos are best kept singly and males should never live together; ReptiFiles warns males can injure or kill one another.
- Unsealed wood in a humid setup. It can warp and rot.
By species

- Crested gecko lighting, heating and humidity
- Crested gecko supplies
- Crested gecko setup checklist
Go tall first, then wide. Pick front doors and a mesh top, plan for a daily mist and dry-out, and fill every level with branches and leaves. A crested gecko will use every inch you give it.
