Best Leopard Gecko Tanks in 2026: 4 Enclosures Compared

The best leopard gecko tanks compared: 36 x 18 x 18 inch glass terrariums and roomier PVC, with sizes from care sources, front doors, heat and UVB mounting.

8 min read 7 sources

A leopard gecko can live 10 to 20 years with good care, and it spends almost all of that time on the floor of one enclosure. So the tank is the purchase that matters most, and the one most often bought too small. Pet store kits still come in 10 and 20 gallon sizes, but current husbandry guidance asks for a 36 x 18 x 18 inch (91 x 46 x 46 cm) tank as the starting point for an adult. Every pick below meets that size or beats it.

How we chose

We did not test these tanks. We compared the makers’ own specs against what the care sources ask for, and kept only enclosures that meet the adult size. The criteria:

  • Floor space first. Leopard geckos live on the ground. ReptiFiles calls floor space “the most important consideration” and asks for no smaller than 36 x 18 x 18 inches, with at least 4.5 square feet of floor. PetMD agrees that floor matters more than height. The RSPCA’s minimum is smaller (60 x 30 x 40 cm) but its wording is “as large as possible.”
  • Room for a real gradient. ReptiFiles puts the basking surface at 94 to 97°F (34 to 36°C) and the cool end at 70 to 77°F (21 to 25°C). That gap needs distance, which a short tank cannot give.
  • Front-opening doors. ReptiFiles notes that reaching in from above can make animals more defensive, and front doors make feeding and spot cleaning easier.
  • A top that takes lamps. A mesh top lets a dome lamp and a UVB fixture sit above the tank. Mesh blocks some UVB, which ReptiFiles’ distance tables allow for.
  • Material for your room. Glass is easy to see into and widely sold; PVC and wood hold heat better in a cold home.

Older sheets, such as VCA’s, still give 10 gallons as enough. We follow the newer, larger figures because they make the gradient and the three hides possible.

REPTI ZOO 50 Gallon Glass Terrarium

Best overall

REPTI ZOO 50 Gallon Glass Terrarium (36 x 18 x 18 in)

A front-opening glass terrarium at 36 x 18 x 18 inches, the footprint ReptiFiles gives as the minimum for an adult leopard gecko. The two front doors open separately and the bottom frame is raised so a heat mat can fit underneath.

Size
36 x 18 x 18 in (91 x 46 x 46 cm)
Volume
Sold as 50 gallons
Access
Two front-opening doors, screen top

Best for

US keepers who want the recommended adult size in glass without a custom build.

Worth knowing

Glass loses heat faster than PVC, and the top frame is not meant to carry heavy fixtures. Rest lamps in a dome or on a stand.

Who it suits: most US keepers setting up a first adult enclosure.

What stands out: it is the exact 36 x 18 x 18 inch footprint ReptiFiles asks for, with two front doors that open separately, a screen top for lamps, and a raised bottom frame that leaves room for a heat mat underneath. It ships flat (knock-down), which keeps shipping simpler for a glass tank this size.

What to watch for: glass loses heat faster than PVC, so in a cold room you may need more wattage at the warm end, always on a thermostat. The top frame is not built for heavy fixtures, so rest lamps in a dome or on a stand. You assemble it yourself.

Zilla QuickBuild 65 Gallon Glass Terrarium

Best from a major brand

Zilla QuickBuild 65 Gallon Glass Terrarium (36 x 18 x 18 in)

A glass terrarium from Zilla at 36 x 18 x 18 inches, the footprint ReptiFiles gives as the minimum for an adult leopard gecko. Zilla is one of the long-established US reptile brands.

Size
36 x 18 x 18 in (91 x 46 x 46 cm)
Volume
Sold as 65 gallons
Material
Glass

Best for

US keepers who want the recommended adult size from a major reptile brand.

Worth knowing

Glass loses heat faster than PVC or wood. Check the lid and door locks are closed every time, and rest lamps in a dome rather than on the glass.

Who it suits: keepers who prefer a long-established US reptile brand, or who want every opening lockable.

What stands out: Zilla describes the QuickBuild as front opening, with sliding glass doors, a double-hinged top screen and a feeding port in the top, and says the doors, the top screen and the feeding port can all be locked. That is more locking points than most glass tanks at this size. The Amazon listing gives 36 x 18 x 18 inches, the ReptiFiles minimum.

What to watch for: Zilla sells the QuickBuild in several sizes, including 36 x 18 x 18 and 48 x 18 x 18 inches, and gallon labels differ between sellers, so check the dimensions on the listing before you order. Either size meets the adult minimum. Like any glass tank it loses heat through the sides; a background on three sides helps both heat and the gecko’s sense of security.

Reptile Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure

Best for more room (PVC)

Reptile Habitats 4x2x2 PVC Enclosure V3 (120 gallon)

A 48 x 24 x 24 inch enclosure with PVC side and back panels, front glass doors, an aluminum frame and a heavy-duty screen top. For a leopard gecko it gives about 8 square feet of floor, close to double the 4.5 square feet ReptiFiles sets as the minimum, and the PVC walls hold heat better than glass.

Size
48 x 24 x 24 in (about 120 x 60 x 60 cm)
Walls
PVC panels
Front
Glass doors
Top
Heavy-duty screen
Frame
Aluminum

Best for

Keepers who want more floor than the minimum, or who live in a cool home where a glass tank struggles to hold the warm end.

Worth knowing

It is bigger and costs more than a 36 x 18 x 18 glass tank. Lamps sit on the screen top, and mesh blocks some UVB, so set the lamp distance for a mesh top. Every heat source still needs a thermostat.

$349.00iPrice as of Oct 16, 8:01 AM UTC. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Who it suits: keepers with the space for a bigger enclosure, or a cool home where glass struggles.

What stands out: at 48 x 24 inches the floor is about 8 square feet, close to double the ReptiFiles minimum. ReptiFiles adds that larger is better as long as the enclosure is laid out well, and the extra length makes it easier to hold a warm end and a cool end that are really different. The PVC side and back panels hold heat well and give the gecko solid walls.

What to watch for: it costs more and takes more floor space than a 3 ft tank. ReptiFiles’ enclosure comparison warns that PVC can hold heat so well the cool end warms up too, so check the cool end with a probe thermometer once it is running. Lamps sit on the screen top.

For UK keepers, a 4 ft wooden vivarium does the same job, with solid walls that insulate well:

UK alternative: 4 ft wooden vivarium

Repti-Life 48 x 24 x 24 inch Vivarium (4ft, flatpacked)

A UK-made wooden vivarium in the 4 x 2 x 2 ft size, built from 15 mm melamine-faced board with a toughened glass front. Wooden vivaria hold heat well and give a dragon solid walls for security.

Size
48 x 24 x 24 in (about 122 x 61 x 61 cm)
Material
15 mm MFC (melamine-faced chipboard)
Front
4 mm toughened safety glass
Ventilation
Four large vents
Other
Stackable, solid back, made in the UK

Best for

UK keepers who want a full adult-size vivarium at the RSPCA minimum footprint.

Worth knowing

It arrives flatpacked, so plan an hour or two to build it. Lamps mount inside a wooden viv, so every heat bulb needs a guard and a thermostat.

Wood needs sealed joints if you keep a damp humid hide in it, and any heat bulb mounted inside needs a guard.

Exo Terra Glass Terrarium, 90 x 45 x 45 cm

Best for UK keepers

Exo Terra Glass Terrarium, 90 x 45 x 45 cm (36 x 18 x 18 in)

Exo Terra's large wide glass terrarium, with dual front-opening doors, a mesh top for lighting, and a raised bottom frame for an under-tank heater. Sold in both the US and UK at the 36 x 18 x 18 inch size.

Size
90 x 45 x 45 cm (36 x 18 x 18 in)
Access
Dual front-opening doors
Top
Removable mesh cover

Best for

A widely available glass option in either market, at the size most care guides now suggest.

Worth knowing

The mesh top blocks some UVB, so the UVB lamp distance needs to account for it.

Who it suits: UK keepers, and US keepers who prefer Exo Terra.

What stands out: Exo Terra sells its large wide glass terrarium in both markets at the 90 x 45 x 45 cm (36 x 18 x 18 inch) size, with dual front doors, a removable mesh top and a raised bottom frame for an under-tank heater. In the UK, where wooden vivariums are the norm, it is one of the easiest ways to get the recommended glass footprint.

What to watch for: the link searches for the size, so check the listing shows 90 x 45 x 45 cm before you buy; Exo Terra makes several shorter and narrower tanks. The mesh top blocks some UVB, so set the lamp distance for a mesh top.

What to avoid

  • 10 and 20 gallon “starter kits” for an adult. They are often sold with the gecko, but they are well under the ReptiFiles size, and the warm and cool ends end up only inches apart. A hatchling can start small, but buying the adult tank first saves buying twice.
  • Tall, narrow tanks. An 18 x 18 x 24 inch terrarium is built for climbers and has half the floor of a 36 x 18 inch tank. Leopard geckos need length, not height.
  • Low tanks under 18 inches tall. Some “wide and low” tanks are only 12 inches high. ReptiFiles’ 18 inch height leaves room for low climbing pieces and keeps the gecko well clear of the lamps.
  • All-screen cages. In our view, mesh sides cannot hold a warm end at 90°F (32°C) or more.
  • Heat rocks and unregulated heat. Every heat source, mat or lamp, needs a thermostat. See our heating and thermostats guide.
  • Two geckos in one tank. Buy one tank per gecko.
  • Calcium sand and other risky loose substrates. VCA advises avoiding sand, corncob and crushed walnut shells, and ReptiFiles and the RSPCA both say to avoid calcium sand.

By species

For most keepers, a 36 x 18 x 18 inch front-opening glass tank is the right first and last purchase. If you have the room or a cold house, go bigger in PVC or wood. Either way, give the floor three zones and put every heat source on a thermostat.
