Best UVB Lights for Bearded Dragons in 2026: 5 T5 HO Kits Compared

The best T5 HO UVB kits for bearded dragons compared: 10%, 12% and 14% tubes, the right length for your enclosure, distance over mesh or inside, and a UV meter.

9 min read 8 sources

A bearded dragon’s UVB light does more for its long-term health than almost anything else you buy. The good news is that the choice is narrower than the shelf suggests: every pick here is a linear T5 HO tube of 10 to 14%, because that is what the care sources call for. What really separates them is strength, length and how they fit your enclosure, so this guide sorts them by those.

How we chose

We did not test these lamps. We shortlisted them against what the veterinary and care sources say a bearded dragon needs, then checked each maker’s own specs.

  • Strength: a 10 to 14% T5 HO tube. The RSPCA says 10 to 12%. ReptiFiles recommends Arcadia’s T5 HO Desert 12% or Dragon 14%. Older T8 tubes and coil bulbs did not make the list.
  • The right UV index at the basking spot. The BIAZA UV-Tool (Baines et al., 2016) places the inland bearded dragon in Ferguson zones 3 to 4, the open-sun baskers. Exo Terra’s summary of the zones gives a highest recorded UVI of 2.9 to 7.4 for zone 3 and 4.5 to 9.5 for zone 4. In practice, the RSPCA aims for UVI 3.0 to 5.0 at the basking spot and ReptiFiles for 4.0 to 4.5, falling to zero in the shade.
  • Length: about half the enclosure. ReptiFiles says a tube about half the enclosure length, on the same side as the heat: roughly 22 inches for a 4 ft enclosure and 34 inches for 6 ft. Arcadia’s own method covers about half to two thirds of the enclosure, so the dragon can move from bright light into shade.
  • A reflector. All of these kits have one, which pushes more of the tube’s output down toward the dragon.
  • Established makers. We favored brands that publish distance and UVI data, so you can set the height from numbers rather than guesswork.

The MSD Veterinary Manual names too little UVB as one of the causes of metabolic bone disease, which is why this one item deserves the extra care.

Arcadia ProT5 Desert 12%: best overall

Best overall

Arcadia ProT5 UVB Kit, Desert 12%, 24W

A complete high-output T5 UVB kit: the 12% Desert lamp, the controller, a removable curved reflector and a link cable. The 24W size is about 22 inches long, which is roughly half the length of a 4 ft enclosure.

Lamp
T5 HO, D3+ 12% UVB (Desert)
Wattage
24W
Length
About 570 mm (22.4 in) fitting
In the box
Controller, lamp, removable reflector, power and link cables
Mounting
Inside the enclosure or over suitable mesh

Best for

The core UVB light for a 4 x 2 x 2 ft bearded dragon setup, in either market.

Worth knowing

Distance matters more than the box. Mesh between lamp and dragon cuts UVB, so the basking spot sits closer when the lamp is over mesh. Replace the tube on the schedule Arcadia gives (ReptiFiles says every 12 months for T5).

Who it suits: almost every dragon in a 4 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure, in either the US or the UK. It is the tube ReptiFiles names first, in the length it suggests for a 4 ft enclosure.

What stands out: Arcadia publishes UVI readings by distance for its ProT5 kits, measured with a Solarmeter 6.5. For the 12% tube those go from about UVI 8.5 at 12 inches to 3.8 at 20 inches, which puts the RSPCA and ReptiFiles targets within easy reach whether the lamp sits over mesh or inside. The kit comes complete with controller, reflector and cables.

Watch for: the distance changes with your setup. ReptiFiles gives about 11 inches over mesh and 16 to 17 inches mounted inside, measured to the top of the dragon’s back.

REPTI ZOO T5 HO Desert 10.0: best budget

Best budget (US)

REPTI ZOO T5 HO UVB Combo Kit, Desert 10.0, 24W

A lower-cost T5 HO UVB kit: a terrarium hood with a 24W Desert 10.0 tube. A 10% linear T5 HO tube is within the 10 to 12% range the RSPCA gives for bearded dragons, and the 24W size suits a 4 ft enclosure.

Lamp
T5 HO, Desert 10.0 UVB

Best for

US keepers who need a proper linear T5 HO UVB light at the lowest outlay.

Worth knowing

Strength at the basking spot depends on distance and mesh, so set the height with care, ideally with a UV index meter. Replace the tube on schedule (ReptiFiles says every 12 months for T5).

Who it suits: US keepers who need a proper linear T5 HO tube at the lowest outlay. It is a hood and a 24W Desert 10.0 tube in one box.

What stands out: a 10% T5 HO tube sits inside the RSPCA’s 10 to 12% range, and the 24W length suits a 4 ft enclosure. It is the cheapest way we found to get the right type of light rather than a coil bulb.

Watch for: at the gentler end of the range, it may need to sit closer to the basking spot than a 12% tube to reach the same UVI. Without published distance data you cannot set it as precisely as an Arcadia kit, so this is the pick where a UV meter earns its keep. UK keepers should look at the Arcadia 12% instead.

Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO 10.0 Hood: best all-in-one hood

Best all-in-one hood (US)

Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO Terrarium Hood with 10.0 Lamp, 24 in

Zoo Med's T5 HO hood sold with its ReptiSun 10.0 desert UVB tube. Zoo Med says the 24 inch hood holds a 22 inch lamp, the length ReptiFiles suggests for a 4 ft enclosure.

Best for

US keepers who want a widely sold, all-in-one T5 HO 10% kit from one of the biggest reptile brands.

Worth knowing

A 10% tube is at the gentler end of the 10 to 14% range for dragons, so it may need to sit a little closer to the basking spot than a 12% or 14% tube. Check the UVI with a meter if you can.

Who it suits: US keepers who would rather buy from one of the biggest reptile brands and get the hood and tube together.

What stands out: Zoo Med’s 24 inch hood holds a 22 inch lamp, the length for a 4 ft enclosure. Zoo Med makes the hood in longer sizes too (the 36 inch holds a 34 inch lamp, the length for 6 ft), but check which sizes are sold with the 10.0 tube.

Watch for: like the REPTI ZOO kit, it is a 10% tube, so mount it a little closer or check the reading with a meter. Keep the box it came in for the replacement tube size.

Arcadia Dragon 14%, 24 inch: strongest for a 4 ft enclosure

Strongest for 4 ft (US)

Arcadia LumenIZE ProT5 Kit, Dragon 14%, 24W, 24 in

Arcadia's strongest desert tube, the Dragon 14%, in the 24 inch, 24W LumenIZE fixture. ReptiFiles names the Dragon 14% as one of its two recommended tubes for bearded dragons, and the 24 inch size suits a 4 ft enclosure.

Lamp
T5 HO, Dragon 14% UVB
Wattage
24W
Length
24 in fixture

Best for

A 4 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure with the lamp on a mesh top, where the extra strength makes up for what the mesh blocks.

Worth knowing

Strong tubes need distance. ReptiFiles gives about 11 to 12 inches over mesh and 17 to 18 inches mounted inside, to the dragon's back. Too close can overexpose a dragon, especially a pale morph.

Strongest for 4 ft (UK)

Arcadia ProT5 UVB Kit, Dragon 14%, 24W

The UK version of the strongest desert pick: Arcadia's ProT5 controller, reflector and Dragon 14% tube in the 24W length, which suits a 4 ft vivarium.

Lamp
T5 HO, Dragon 14% UVB
Wattage
24W

Best for

UK keepers with a 4 ft vivarium who want the 14% tube rather than the 12%.

Worth knowing

In a wooden vivarium the tube mounts inside with no mesh, so it sits further from the basking spot (ReptiFiles gives 17 to 18 inches). Check the kit length before you order.

View on Amazon UK Affiliate link

Who it suits: a 4 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure where the lamp sits on a mesh top and you want the most margin. Arcadia says mesh blocks about 30% of the UV, and more with fine stainless mesh, so the stronger tube makes up for the loss.

What stands out: this is the second tube ReptiFiles recommends. Arcadia’s figures for the 14% show about UVI 10.5 at 12 inches and 4.6 at 20 inches, so the target band is reachable even with a deep substrate and a tall basking rock.

Watch for: more strength means more care with distance. ReptiFiles gives 11 to 12 inches over mesh and 17 to 18 inches inside. The UV-Tool suggests UVI 7.0 to 8.0 as the safe maximum for zone 4 animals under lamps, and the RSPCA says albino dragons need a maximum of 3.0, so pale morphs are better under the 12%.

Arcadia ProT5 Dragon 14%, 39W: best for a 6 ft enclosure

Best for 6 ft

Arcadia ProT5 UVB Kit, Dragon 14%, 39W

Arcadia's strongest desert kit in the 39W length. ReptiFiles recommends the Dragon 14% tube for bearded dragons and suggests a tube about half the enclosure length, which makes this the size for a 6 ft enclosure.

Lamp
T5 HO, Dragon 14% UVB
Wattage
39W

Best for

A 6 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure, paired with the premium build.

Worth knowing

Too long for a 4 ft enclosure, where the 24W length is the right fit. ReptiFiles gives about 11 to 12 inches over mesh for the 14% tube; a UV index meter is the best check.

$125.99iPrice as of Oct 16, 8:01 AM UTC. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Who it suits: a 6 x 2 x 2 ft enclosure, the size ReptiFiles prefers for an adult.

What stands out: the 39W length is about half of a 6 ft enclosure, which gives the long, even basking zone a big dragon needs, with plenty of shade beyond it.

Watch for: it is too long for a 4 ft enclosure, where it would leave too little shade. Measure the inside of your enclosure before ordering.

Distance, mesh and a UV meter

UVI falls fast with distance, so the same tube can be perfect or useless depending on how high it hangs. Measure from the tube to the top of the dragon’s back on the basking spot, not to the floor.

TubeOver meshMounted inside
Arcadia 12% Desertabout 11 in16 to 17 in
Arcadia 14% Dragon11 to 12 in17 to 18 in

These are ReptiFiles’ starting points. Without a meter, ReptiFiles says to add 1 to 3 inches to allow for your dragon’s height. VCA adds that there must be no glass or plastic between lamp and animal, since both block UVB.

A UV index meter turns all of this into one reading. ReptiFiles says the Solarmeter 6.5 is the only handheld meter that measures UVI accurately. Hold it where the dragon’s back sits, then move it into the shade to check the reading drops away.

UV index meter

Solarmeter Model 6.5R Reptile UV Index Meter

A handheld meter that reads the UV index (UVI) your lamp gives at any spot in the enclosure. Its sensor is weighted to the vitamin D range, and a Ferguson zone chart is printed on the front. ReptiFiles says it is the tool to use for measuring UVI.

Reads
UV index, 0.1 UVI resolution
Accuracy
Plus or minus 10%, NIST traceable (per seller listing)
Power
9V battery
Extra
Ferguson zone chart on the meter

Best for

Setting the basking distance by reading instead of guessing, and knowing when a UVB tube has faded and needs replacing.

Worth knowing

It is a costly tool for one animal. Readings change fast with distance, so always measure at the height of your reptile's back on the basking spot.

Replace T5 tubes every 12 months (ReptiFiles), or sooner if the meter shows output has dropped. UVB fades long before the visible light does.

What to avoid

  • Coil and compact UVB bulbs. They make a small pool of UV instead of a long gradient, and the sources we cite recommend linear T5 HO tubes for dragons.
  • Low output tubes (5 to 7%). Made for shade dwellers in zones 1 and 2, they are too weak for a desert basker at a safe distance.
  • Lamps behind glass or plastic. A UVB lamp on a glass lid or behind a window gives almost nothing, as VCA warns.
  • A tube that is too short. A tube much shorter than half the enclosure leaves too small a basking zone. Arcadia’s method is half to two thirds of the length.
  • Running a tube past its date. It still looks bright long after the UVB has faded. Write the install date on the fitting.
  • Mercury vapor bulbs in a small enclosure. They are the heat and the UVB source at once and cannot be dimmed by a thermostat, so a separate halogen and T5 tube is far easier to control.

By species

See a reptile vet if your dragon has a soft jaw, swollen limbs, trembling or trouble walking. This page is general guidance, not veterinary advice.

For most dragons in a 4 ft enclosure, the Arcadia 12% is the one to buy, and the 14% is the step up if the lamp sits over mesh. Whichever you choose, hang it by the numbers, give the dragon shade to retreat to, and change the tube every year.
