A veiled chameleon setup is a tall screen cage, a T5 UVB light, two basking bulbs on a dimming thermostat, a way to mist every day, branches, plants and a few supplements. The chameleon itself is usually the smallest part of the bill. The enclosure, the lighting and the misting are where the money goes, and they have to be running before the animal comes home.
Below are three complete builds (budget, mid-range and premium), each totaled from today’s Amazon prices, followed by where cutting costs is risky and where it is fine. Picks are based on the care guidance cited at the bottom of this page and on the makers’ own listings; we have not tested them ourselves.

Totals add up the essential items at today's Amazon prices; optional items are listed but not counted. Prices change, so treat totals as a guide.
Prices from Amazon as of Oct 16, 8:01 AM UTC and may change. Details
Each column is a full setup that meets the same care standards; the difference is how much convenience and build quality you pay for. The totals add up the essential items at today’s Amazon prices for your store. Optional items, such as the UV index meter, are listed but not counted. Where an item has no worthwhile cheaper or pricier version, all three columns show the same product. If a total says some items are not priced, that listing had no live price today, so add it before you budget.
The biggest jump between budget and mid-range is the misting system. The budget build mists by hand with a pump sprayer, which works if you will really do it twice a day. The mid-range and premium builds use a timed system. Want a list built around what you already own? Try the Setup Assistant.
Where not to save
Three things decide most of a veiled chameleon’s health, and none of them is a good place to cut corners.
Heat control. The Long Island Bird and Exotics vet clinic (LIBEVC) warns that veiled chameleons may not move away from overheating, which puts them at risk of burns. A dimming thermostat with its probe at the basking branch is what holds the spot at a safe temperature through a warm afternoon. A cheaper dimming thermostat does the same job as a pricier one; what matters is that it is a dimming type and that it covers both 50W bulbs. Never run basking bulbs without one, and never use a heat rock.
Budget dimming thermostat (US)
REPTI ZOO Dimming Thermostat (PID)
A low-cost dimming thermostat made for heat lamps. It turns the basking bulbs down instead of switching them on and off, which is the type of control the site recommends for white basking bulbs.
- Type
- Dimming, PID control
- Use with
- Heat lamp bulbs and heaters (per listing)
- Memory
- Keeps settings after a power cut (per listing)
Best for
A US budget build running two 50W basking bulbs.
Worth knowing
Put the probe at the basking branch, out of the chameleon's reach, and check the branch top with a temperature gun. Confirm the maximum load covers both bulbs before you buy.
Dimming thermostat (UK)
Habistat Dimming Thermostat, 600W
A UK-made dimming thermostat designed for heat bulbs. It turns the power up or down to hold your set temperature rather than switching the bulb fully on and off.
- Type
- Dimming thermostat
- Max load
- 600W
- Min load
- 40W
Best for
UK setups running two 50W basking bulbs.
Worth knowing
It needs a minimum load of 40W, which two 50W bulbs easily meet.
UVB. Without UVB a chameleon cannot make the vitamin D3 it needs to use calcium. The MSD Veterinary Manual lists a lack of UVB, along with diet problems, as a cause of metabolic bone disease in reptiles, and the RVC says chameleons must be exposed to UVB. LIBEVC and ReptiFiles both call for a linear T5 HO tube of 5% or 6%, about 22 inches long. You can save on the brand, but not on the type: a coil or compact UVB bulb is not a cheaper substitute. LIBEVC also says screen mesh can block 30 to 50% of UVB, so the basking branch height matters as much as the lamp.
Budget T5 UVB kit (US)
REPTI ZOO T5 HO UVB Combo Kit, 22 in, 5.0 Lamp (24W)
A 22 inch T5 high-output fixture with a curved reflector and a 5.0 UVB tube. That matches the strength and length the Long Island Bird and Exotics vet clinic and ReptiFiles give for a veiled chameleon (a T5 HO tube of 5% or 6%, about 22 inches).
- Lamp
- T5 HO, 5.0 UVB
- Wattage
- 24W
- Fixture length
- 22 in (per listing)
- Reflector
- Detachable curved reflector
Best for
A tighter budget that still needs a proper linear T5 HO UVB tube over a 24 x 24 x 48 in screen cage.
Worth knowing
Screen mesh cuts UVB by 30 to 50% (LIBEVC), so set the basking branch height with a UV meter or the maker's distance chart. Replace the tube on schedule; UVB fades before the visible light does.
T5 UVB kit (UK and US)
Arcadia ProT5 UVB Kit, Forest 6%, 24W
A complete high-output T5 UVB kit with the 6% Forest lamp, a reflector and a linkable controller. The Long Island Bird and Exotics vet clinic and ReptiFiles both name a 22 inch Arcadia T5 HO 6% as a suitable UVB lamp for a veiled chameleon.
- Lamp
- T5 HO, 6% UVB (Forest)
- Wattage
- 24W
- Fitting length
- About 22.5 in (570 mm)
- In the box
- Controller, lamp, reflector, link cable
- Mounting
- Inside the enclosure or over mesh
Best for
Lying across the top of a 24 x 24 x 48 in screen cage, over the basking branch.
Worth knowing
Screen mesh cuts UVB (the clinic says by 30 to 50%), so the branch height matters more than the box. Aim for a UV index of about 2.5 to 3.0 at the chameleon, checked with a meter, and keep lower branches for shade.
Enclosure size. LIBEVC and ReptiFiles give 24 x 24 x 48 inches tall (60 x 60 x 120 cm) as the minimum for one adult, and LIBEVC prefers 36 x 30 x 48 inches for large males. PetMD says to give the largest habitat possible. Veiled chameleons grow fast, so a small starter cage is outgrown within months; buying the adult size once is cheaper than buying twice. That is why every build here uses the same adult-size screen cage. LIBEVC recommends screen or hybrid sides and advises against fully enclosed glass, and one chameleon per enclosure, always.
Where saving is fine
Hides and decor. Chameleons do not use caves or hides the way geckos do. Their cover is leaves. LIBEVC suggests pothos on the walls with umbrella plant and ficus at the base, and ReptiFiles lists other nontoxic choices. Ordinary pesticide-free plants from a garden center do this well; rinse the leaves and replace any soil with fertilizer pellets. Add branches and a bendable vine or two so there are horizontal routes at several heights. LIBEVC says the toes should wrap about halfway around a branch. PetMD notes that silk plants cannot hold water, so they should not be the main cover.

Bendable vine
Exo Terra Jungle Vine, Large (PT3086)
A bendable artificial vine you can wind between branches to make horizontal routes across the cage. LIBEVC asks for branches and vines at different heights, mostly horizontal, and live plants for cover and drinking.
- Size
- Large
- Model
- PT3086
- Type
- Bendable artificial vine
Best for
Filling the gaps between branches and live plants so the chameleon can cross the whole cage.
Worth knowing
It adds routes, not cover or water. Live, pesticide-free plants such as pothos or umbrella plant still do that job. Check that the vine is thick enough for the toes to wrap about halfway around.
Substrate. This one costs nothing. LIBEVC recommends a bare floor over a drainage tray or bucket. VCA warns against loose, particle-type bedding a chameleon could swallow, and the RVC says wood chips should never be used. Skip bagged bedding and put that money toward drainage.
Misting. A timed system is a convenience, not a requirement. LIBEVC lists a pump-style pressure sprayer as one way to mist, and it doubles as a backup when an automatic system is being cleaned. What the chameleon needs is water it can see falling, at least twice a day.
Hand pump sprayer
Hand pump pressure sprayer (about 1.5 to 2 liters)
A garden-style pressure sprayer you pump up once and then spray for minutes. The Long Island Bird and Exotics vet clinic lists a pump-style pressure sprayer as one way to mist; it is much easier on the hand than a trigger bottle.
- Type
- Pump-up pressure sprayer
- Use
- Misting leaves and branches
Best for
Twice-daily hand misting, and as a backup if an automatic system fails.
Worth knowing
Use it only for the chameleon, never for garden chemicals, and rinse it out regularly.
Water bowl. Not needed. PetMD and LIBEVC both say veiled chameleons drink droplets from leaves, not from bowls.
Ongoing costs
The setup is a one-time cost, but a few things come back again and again.
- UVB tube replacement. UVB output fades long before the visible light does. PetMD says to replace the bulb every 6 months, and the RVC says to check output regularly and change bulbs at least as often as the maker says. A UV index meter lets you replace on real readings rather than the calendar.
- Basking bulbs. They fail without warning, so a spare in the cupboard means no cold day while you wait for a delivery.
- Live insects and gut-load. LIBEVC feeds juveniles as much as they will take once or twice a day and adults 2 to 3 insects every other day, so food costs more in the first year than later.
- Supplements. Calcium without D3 is used most often; the multivitamin less often. Sources give different schedules, so agree one with your vet.
- Plants. Live plants get trampled and nibbled, and replacing a tired pothos is part of the routine.
- Vet visits. LIBEVC recommends a check-up within the first few weeks, with a fecal test for parasites, then once a year. The RVC and PetMD also recommend yearly health checks. The ARAV directory lists reptile vets near you; budget for an emergency visit too.

UV index meter (optional)
Solarmeter 6.5R Reptile UV Index Meter
A handheld meter that reads the UV index (UVI) your chameleon actually gets at the basking branch. ReptiFiles and the Long Island Bird and Exotics vet clinic both use a Solarmeter 6.5 to set the branch height.
- Measures
- UV index, 280 to 400 nm (per listing)
- Range
- 0 to 199.9 UVI
- Model
- 6.5R
Best for
Setting the basking branch height under screen mesh, and checking that an older UVB tube still puts out enough.
Worth knowing
It is the most expensive item on the list that the chameleon never sees. If you skip it, follow the lamp maker's distance chart and allow for the mesh.
Put the money into height, UVB, a dimming thermostat and reliable misting, and save on everything the chameleon only climbs on. A plain branch and a garden-center pothos do their job as well as anything in a pet store, as long as the light and the water are right.
